It is a professional-style 3-axis smartphone stabiliser designed for content creators, vloggers, filmmakers and social media users. It uses high-torque motors to reduce unwanted shaking and produce smoother footage when recording while walking, panning or following a moving subject. The Smooth 5 includes physical controls for camera adjustments, a wide mechanical movement range and support for optional magnetic fill lights. It works with compatible Android and iOS smartphones through the ZY Cami application, which provides additional creative shooting features. 3-Axis Mechanical Stabilisation The Zhiyun Smooth 5 uses a 3-axis stabilisation system to compensate for unwanted movements along the pan, tilt and roll axes. This helps produce smoother video when walking, filming moving subjects or making controlled camera movements. The stabiliser is particularly useful for product videos, travel content, interviews, tutorials, TikTok videos, YouTube videos and promotional content. . Wide Movement Range The Smooth 5 supports 360° continuous pan rotation, approximately 349° of tilt movement and 300° of roll movement. Its mechanical design provides flexibility for low-angle shots, wide-angle filming and creative camera movements. The wide movement range helps reduce the likelihood of the gimbal arm obstructing the smartphone camera during certain shooting angles, although compatibility can depend on the phone’s size, camera arrangement and mounting position. High-Torque Magnetic Steel Motors Zhiyun equips the Smooth 5 with high-torque magnetic steel motors designed to stabilise relatively large and heavy smartphones. The supported payload is approximately 150–300g+, depending on the phone and configuration. Professional Physical Controls The Smooth 5 features a physical control panel with a joystick, buttons and a control wheel. These controls allow users to adjust gimbal movement and, when supported by the connected smartphone and application, control functions such as focus and zoom. Physical controls are useful when filming because they reduce the need to touch the smartphone screen while recording. They also provide more precise control for cinematic movements and manual adjustments. SmartFollow 3.0 Tracking SmartFollow 3.0 helps the gimbal track a selected subject through the compatible ZY Cami application. This is useful when recording yourself, following a person or filming moving subjects. Tracking performance depends on lighting, subject visibility, movement speed, background complexity and application compatibility. SmartFollow features may not be available in every smartphone camera application. Magnetic Fill-Light Support The Smooth 5 supports optional magnetic fill lights that can be attached to the smartphone clamp. These lights are designed to improve illumination when recording in dim environments, indoors or at night. Compatible fill lights can help brighten faces and nearby subjects. The availability of fill lights and the number included depend on the specific Smooth 5 package purchased. Multiple Shooting Modes The gimbal supports several operating modes designed for different filming styles: Pan Follow: The gimbal follows horizontal movements while helping maintain the selected tilt and roll position. Lock Mode: Keeps the camera direction relatively fixed while the user moves the handle. Follow Mode: Allows the gimbal to follow selected movements for smoother tracking shots. POV Mode: Provides a more immersive movement style by allowing additional axis movement. Vortex Mode: Enables creative 360° spinning footage. Available modes and controls may vary depending on the firmware, connected smartphone and application being used. ZY Cami Application The Zhiyun Smooth 5 works with the ZY Cami application, which provides additional smartphone filming tools and creative features. Depending on device compatibility, users can access functions such as SmartFollow, gesture control, time-lapse and panorama shooting. Battery Life and Charging The Smooth 5 has a 2,600mAh rechargeable battery and provides up to approximately 12 hours of operating time under normal conditions without fill lights. Battery life may be reduced when using magnetic fill lights or demanding operating modes. The gimbal can be fully charged in approximately 2 hours under suitable charging conditions. It also supports reverse charging, allowing it to provide power to a compatible smartphone during filming when the required connection and conditions are supported. Landscape and Portrait Filming The Smooth 5 supports both landscape and portrait smartphone orientations. This makes it suitable for different content formats, including YouTube videos, Instagram Reels, TikTok videos, Facebook content and conventional horizontal video production. Users should ensure that the phone is properly balanced after changing orientation to reduce motor strain and improve stabilisation performance.
